How does a prism suncatcher create rainbows? 

A prism suncatcher creates rainbows through refraction and dispersion. When direct sunlight enters one of the faceted crystal prisms, the light bends. Because the different wavelengths of visible light bend by slightly different amounts, white sunlight separates into a spectrum of colors. The violet, blue, cyan, green, yellow, orange, and red light exits through the prism’s facets and is projected onto nearby walls, floors, ceilings, furniture, and other surfaces. Does a prism suncatcher need direct sunlight to work? 

Yes. Direct sunlight produces the strongest, brightest, and most colorful rainbows. Sunlight is extremely bright and contains the full visible spectrum. Most indoor lighting is either too weak or too diffused to create the same effect. In my experiments with different light sources, a powerful xenon light came closest, but the resulting spectrums were smaller, whiter, and less colorful than those produced by direct sunlight. Some strong artificial lights may create a faint prism effect, but they do not compare with direct sun.  

Where is the best place to hang a suncatcher? 

The best place to hang a suncatcher is in a sunny window that receives direct sunlight for at least part of the day. East-, south-, and west-facing windows can all be good choices, depending on the season, nearby trees and buildings, roof overhangs, and the layout of your home. Position the suncatcher where sunlight can pass directly through the crystal prisms. High, unobstructed windows, glass doors, stairwells, and rooms with light-colored walls can produce especially dramatic results. I have two SunRain Prism Suncatchers in our west-facing bathroom window. The mostly white walls, sink, and bathtub make an excellent background for the colors. Will a prism suncatcher create rainbows on cloudy days or through tinted windows? 

Under fully overcast skies, probably not. On partly cloudy days, you may see rainbows whenever direct sunlight breaks through the clouds. A Prism Suncatcher can work through tinted or energy-efficient windows, but the rainbows may be dimmer because the glass reduces the amount of sunlight reaching the prisms. The amount of reduction depends on the darkness and type of window coating.

What size Prism Suncatcher should I choose? 

For most rooms, the 6-inch SunRain Prism Suncatcher is an excellent choice. It contains 25 two-inch crystal prisms, each with multiple light-catching facets, and produces an impressive display of bright rainbows. Choose the 7-inch model when you want a more prominent statement piece. Its longer 2.5-inch crystal prisms create a larger, more elegant appearance and can produce slightly longer light spectrums. The 7-inch model also makes an impressive wedding, anniversary, housewarming, or special-occasion gift.  

How far into a room will the rainbows travel? 

SunRain rainbows can travel completely across a room. Under the right conditions, they can remain bright and colorful when projected onto a surface approximately 30 feet from the prisms. The actual distance and brightness depend on the strength and angle of the sunlight, the position of the suncatcher, and the color and texture of the surface receiving the light.

What is the difference between a SunRain Prism Suncatcher and an ordinary crystal suncatcher? 

Many ordinary suncatchers use one large prism or a collection of small beads. SunRain uses 25 Asfour 30% lead-crystal chandelier prisms assembled into one circular sunburst design. Each prism has multiple facets that receive, separate, and redirect sunlight. Together, the 25 prisms create a much larger display of colorful light than a single hanging prism. The result is both a handmade crystal decoration and a powerful rainbow maker.  

Can I choose the color of the center? 

Yes. Many SunRain Prism Suncatchers are available with a choice of 32 center colors at no additional charge. The center begins with clear resin. A small amount of color is added so that it remains transparent and allows light to pass through it. Some designs are available only with a clear center, so look for a product listing that includes the Choose Your Color option.  

Can a Prism Suncatcher be personalized or engraved? 

Yes. Personalized engraving is available by purchasing the separate glass dome engraving listing with your Prism Suncatcher. The engraving may contain up to 30 characters arranged on as many as three lines, with a maximum of 10 characters per line. You may also select from the available fonts. The engraved glass dome can be placed over either a clear resin center or a Choose Your Color center. Engraving costs an additional $20 and may add approximately 7 to 10 days to the order-processing time.  

Is a Prism Suncatcher easy to hang? 

Yes. Each SunRain Prism Suncatcher includes a small teacup hook that can usually be screwed into a wooden window frame by hand. Two small nails are also included as an alternative hanging method. Hang the suncatcher securely and make certain that the chain, hook, and connection point can support its weight. Position it close to the window glass where it will receive the longest period of direct sunlight.  

Is a Prism Suncatcher suitable for renters? 

Yes. Because the suncatcher hangs from a chain, it is easy to take down and move to another window or another home. Renters should choose a mounting method permitted by their lease and be prepared to repair any small nail or screw hole when moving. Handle the suncatcher carefully while moving it so that the crystal prisms are not dropped or struck against a hard surface.  

How do I clean and care for my Prism Suncatcher? 

Use the included microfiber cloth to remove ordinary dust and fingerprints. Hold the suncatcher by its circular resin center rather than pulling on the individual prisms. If a crystal prism develops an oily residue, such as kitchen grease, apply a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to the microfiber cloth and gently clean the crystal. Avoid soaking the suncatcher or applying harsh cleaning products to the resin center, chain, or connecting hardware. When the suncatcher is not being displayed, store it in the protective plastic box provided with your order.

Will suncatcher rainbows damage furniture, flooring, or walls? 

Under normal household conditions, the colored light produced by a prism suncatcher will not damage the surfaces on which it appears. The light has been separated and dispersed by the crystal facets rather than concentrated into a tiny heat-producing point. As with ordinary sunlight entering through a window, prolonged exposure may contribute to gradual fading of some sensitive fabrics, artwork, or finishes. What should I do if my Prism Suncatcher is not producing many rainbows? 

The most likely cause is its position. Begin by placing the suncatcher on a sunny windowsill and leaning it carefully against the glass where direct sunlight reaches the prisms. Observe that location at different times during the day. The sun’s angle changes continuously, so a window that produces few rainbows in the morning may produce a spectacular display later in the afternoon. Once you find the best location, hang the suncatcher by its chain at a height that receives the longest period of direct sunlight. Also check for trees, curtains, roof overhangs, or buildings blocking the sun. Tinted glass, dust on the prisms, and hanging the suncatcher too far from the window can also reduce the effect. Do suncatcher rainbows give off very bright light?

Suncatcher rainbows are bright enough to sparkle, attract attention, and create vivid patches of color, but they are not usually harsh like staring into a flashlight or directly at the sun. The crystal separates sunlight into many colored rays, producing areas of intense color rather than one single white spot. In a normal room, the effect feels lively, playful, and fascinating to watch. I was honestly astounded the first time I saw what these lead-crystal chandelier prisms could do when placed in direct sunlight.  

Is suncatcher rainbow light safe for your eyes? 

The rainbow patches projected onto walls, floors, ceilings, furniture, and clothing are comfortable to enjoy under normal conditions. However, you should never stare directly at the sun or deliberately position your eye in a strong reflection. A prism bends and separates sunlight, but the original light source is still the sun. Use the same common sense you would use around any bright reflection from glass, mirrors, water, or polished metal.  

How many colors are in a suncatcher rainbow?

What is the best glass for a suncatcher?

Can I order an Extension Chain? 

Yes. SunRain extension chains are available as add-ons in gold-colored or bronze-colored finishes.
